Mews in Bloom Competition: Judge and Judging Date Announced

We’re delighted to announce that Endellion ‘Delli’ Lycett Green will be judging this year’s Mews in Bloom competition, following in the footsteps of her late mother, acclaimed writer Candida Lycett Green, who judged the competition for us in 2007.

Meet the Mews in Bloom Judge: Endellion Lycett Green

Delli Lycett Green is a contemporary artist whose creative roots run deep. Raised in a family of writers and artists, she was surrounded by inspiration from an early age. Her mother, Candida, was not only a prolific author but also a passionate gardener. Delli also inherited a wealth of botanical knowledge from her maternal grandmother, Penelope, and was encouraged creatively by her grandfather, the former Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman, with whom she frequently exchanged poems and sketches. Growing up in such a richly creative environment, it was only natural that Delli would go on to become an artist herself — as she puts it, “it couldn’t have been otherwise”.

Over the course of her distinguished 27-year career, Delli has become known for her bold and sensuous paintings centred around plant life. Nature has remained a constant source of inspiration in her work, which she describes as “a lifelong homage to plants”. Her process begins outdoors, photographing or sketching flora, focusing on their natural forms and patterns. These studies are then developed into paintings in her studio in Wales.

Delli has exhibited her work at P. & D. Colnaghi, Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert, Browse & Darby, and is represented by the Laura Lopes Gallery. Her paintings are held in collections including Chatsworth House, the NatWest Art Collection, St Thomas’ Hospital, and the Arcadia Group, as well as in numerous private collections both in the UK and abroad.

A Family Connection

Delli’s mother, Candida Lycett Green, was a cousin of Antoine Lurot and judged previous Mews in Bloom competitions. Candida was an avid gardener who wrote many books celebrating English gardens including The Garden At Highgrove, Brillian Gardens: A Celebration of English Gardening and The Front Garden.

We’re truly thrilled to welcome Delli as this year’s judge – her deep knowledge of plants and flowers, along with her artist’s eye, makes her the perfect person to assess our blooming mews streets.
