Mews market lessons from Wales’ most scenic roads

Lurot Brand’s Managing Director, Peggy Lurot, writes about the surprising overlaps between touring the Welsh countryside and heading London’s only mews specialist.

This summer, I was lucky enough to go on a motorbike tour of Wales with my husband and one of our sons. Five days, 1,310 km / 814 miles, 28 hours of actual riding, wonderful family time, and some of the most glorious scenery and roads you could wish for. It was the easiest way to unwind; there isn’t much room to think about anything else while riding, it’s all about the road and the view in front of you.

I haven’t been riding for long, so what continues to amaze me is the community around it. I have lost count of how many times we have exchanged a head nod or a safe-journey signal with fellow riders passing in the opposite direction, so much so that, back in a car a few days later, I caught myself nodding at a passing biker out of habit. There is, of course, a vulnerability to riding a motorbike, but also a real focus and precision required to do it safely and well. Bikers understand this about each other instinctively, and you can always count on that community to look out for you.

Reflecting on it, I found more than a few parallels with what we do at Lurot Brand. Running a small family business specialising in mews houses carries its own vulnerability, and demands the same precision, expertise, commitment and care. We don’t deal in volume, so we are acutely aware that our professionalism is what our reputation rests on, every time, with every mews. Unlike some larger, more mainstream agents, whose attention can be spread thin across a big portfolio, we know we must bring our best to every single instruction.

That focus is what has always shaped how we look after our clients and applicants, advising with a long-term view, and putting their interests first rather than chasing a KPI. This is how we have spent over five decades promoting these streets, sharing what we know about mews living, and building relationships across the community. It’s also why, so often, people come back to us when it’s finally time to sell, buy, let or rent.

The flip side of being this invested is that when a mews house ends up with a competitor, it does feel personal. It pushes us to do better, so that we remain the first and only call when it comes to a mews house. As a small independent, we are up against real competition from the corporate agents, but when it comes to mews, we know exactly what we are doing: how to market them, how to price them, and how to find them the right new residents.

Over 50 years, we have come to understand not just the properties but the streets, the neighbours, and the quiet things that make one mews house different from the next; knowledge that simply cannot be replicated at scale or learnt from a portfolio spreadsheet.

So, if you are contemplating selling or letting, we hope you will give us the chance to earn your trust. We care about your story and your home, and we will always give you our honest recommendation. We will work hard to exceed your expectations, and we hope, before too long, to welcome you into the Lurot Brand family.
