Winsland Mews, Bayswater, London, W2

Winsland Mews is a redeveloped through road in Paddington, Westminster, situated just off London Street and immediately behind Paddington Station. Formerly known as Arthur Mews, Winsland Mews occupies a convenient position close to Paddington Basin and the extensive range of shops, cafés, restaurants and amenities around Paddington. Its location also provides excellent access to the transport connections of Paddington Station, making this a well-connected part of central London. Although much of the original mews character has been altered through redevelopment, Winsland Mews retains an interesting connection with the area’s industrial and railway heritage.

One of the most notable historic elements of Winsland Mews is Mint Wing Mews, which used to form part of the mews development. Before becoming NHS office accommodation, Mint Wing Mews had an important practical role during the construction of Paddington Station in the mid-nineteenth century. The station, designed by Marc Isambard Brunel, became the London terminus of the Great Western Railway and was constructed with the assistance of around 300 horses and 50 workers. The mews provided a place for the horses used to transport construction materials, with a distinctive two-level arrangement and ramp allowing the animals to be moved between the upper and lower areas.

Today, Winsland Mews is primarily characterised by its redeveloped buildings and highly convenient Paddington location. Its proximity to Paddington Basin places it close to a thriving mix of offices, leisure facilities, restaurants and riverside amenities, while the station provides straightforward connections across London and beyond. The combination of central location and links to the area’s railway history gives Winsland Mews a distinctive place within the wider Paddington neighbourhood.
