Sussex Mews East, Bayswater, London, W2

Sussex Mews East is a quiet, cobbled mews within the Hyde Park Estate, close to Lancaster Gate, Hyde Park and Paddington. Approached through its own arch from Clifton Place, the present-day mews is largely the result of redevelopment, with nine modern-style town houses dating from the late 1960s alongside a period property incorporated into the entrance archway. The site has much older origins, having originally formed part of the early 19th-century development of the area, when mews streets were created to serve the substantial houses being built across what had previously been open land. Sussex Mews East originally provided stable and coach-house accommodation for the properties around Sussex Place, although little of the original mews survives today apart from the historic gatehouse, Sussex Cottage, which is Grade II listed.

Sussex Mews East also has an intriguing connection with Winston Churchill. In 1921, Churchill’s private secretary paid a £52 deposit on 7 Sussex Mews East, with a Blue Plaque commemorating Churchill’s association with the adjoining building on Sussex Square. The mews has also earned recognition for its attractive planting, having previously won the Chelsea Gardeners Guild Mews in Bloom competition. Today, Sussex Mews East offers a peaceful residential setting while remaining exceptionally well placed for Hyde Park, Lancaster Gate and Paddington.
