The mews was originally created to provide stable and coach-house accommodation for the substantial houses on nearby Baker Street. Its connection with Sherlock Holmes is reflected in its name: York Mews South was renamed Sherlock Mews, a detail noted in correspondence published in The Times in 1950 during discussions surrounding a proposed Sherlock Holmes exhibition. The association adds an unusual literary dimension to this historic central London mews.
