Ladbroke Walk, Holland Park, Notting Hill, W11
Ladbroke Walk is a charming historic mews street in Notting Hill, offering a peaceful residential setting within one of west London’s most desirable neighbourhoods. Located between Holland Park and Notting Hill Underground stations, this attractive cobbled road is characterised by elegant period properties, mellow brick walls and tree-lined pavements. Unlike many traditional mews streets, several homes on Ladbroke Walk are larger than the typical mews house, with some properties benefiting from private rear gardens. Combining historic character with a prime location, Ladbroke Walk provides residents with easy access to Holland Park, Portobello Road, Kensington Palace and the vibrant amenities of Notting Hill.
Ladbroke Walk was originally designed as the service mews for the grand residences at Nos. 2–38 Holland Park Avenue, which were built during the 1820s as part of the first wave of development on the historic Ladbroke Estate. The street was likely created at the same time, running behind the gardens of these early homes to provide access to stables and service buildings. Historical plans from 1836 show that only a few of the Holland Park Avenue houses had constructed stables at the rear, including those corresponding to Nos. 11, 13 and 16 Ladbroke Walk, while much of the mews remained undeveloped. Over time, the former service spaces evolved into attractive residential properties, creating the distinctive mix of architecture seen today. No. 24 Ladbroke Walk is a notable three-storey brick building with a different appearance from its neighbours and may have originally provided accommodation connected with the former fire station on nearby Ladbroke Road.
Today, Ladbroke Walk is a highly desirable address thanks to its combination of historic charm, green surroundings and excellent local amenities. The street is just a short stroll from Holland Park, Kensington Gardens, Portobello Road Market and Westbourne Grove, while central London destinations such as Bond Street are easily reached by tube. The surrounding area offers a superb selection of cafés, restaurants and independent venues, including Notting Hill Coffee Project, Eggbreak, The Prince Albert and The Sun In Splendour. With its cobbled streetscape, historic origins and proximity to some of London’s most iconic neighbourhood landmarks, Ladbroke Walk remains a hidden gem within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
