Clarges Mews, Mayfair, London, W1J
Clarges Mews is a peaceful residential mews tucked away in the heart of Mayfair. Lined with an attractive mix of period houses and a modern apartment building, Clarges Mews offers a quiet retreat just moments from the elegant surroundings of Berkeley Square and Green Park. Despite its central location, the mews enjoys a secluded atmosphere while remaining within easy walking distance of Green Park Underground station and the outstanding shops, restaurants and amenities that make Mayfair one of London’s most desirable neighbourhoods.
Originally built to provide stabling and carriage houses for the grand homes on nearby Charles Street, Clarges Mews reflects the traditional purpose of London’s historic mews, with accommodation above for stable staff. As horses were replaced by motor cars, the buildings were gradually converted into desirable homes, although a small amount of commercial use remains today. Formerly known as Lambeth Mews, the street is thought to have been renamed after Sir Thomas Clarges, the English politician who played an important role in the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660. Following significant bomb damage during the Second World War, much of the mews was rebuilt, leaving little visible evidence of its original equestrian heritage.
