Catherine Wheel Yard, St James’s, Westminster, London, SW1A

Catherine Wheel Yard is a secure private courtyard located adjacent to Spencer House, just off the lower end of St. James’s Street, with easy access to both Green Park and St. James’s Park. The name ‘Catherine Wheel Yard’ dates back to around 1680, derived from a tavern that once occupied the eastern end of the north side. This historic mews has evolved over time, transitioning from a thoroughfare to a modern residential development after the closure of its north-south passage shortly after 1843.

During World War II, Catherine Wheel Yard suffered significant damage when a high-explosive bomb struck the area, necessitating extensive rebuilding of the properties. Despite this tumultuous history, the mews has retained its charm and character, reflecting the resilience of the community.

The location is excellent, with St. James’s offering an impressive array of galleries, restaurants, and shops. With its significant history and excellent nearby amenities, Catherine Wheel Yard continues to be a unique and desirable location to live.
