History of Bathurst Mews

Bathurst Mews dates back to the late 1830s and 1840s, when it was built to provide stabling and service accommodation for the grand houses surrounding it in Bathurst Street. The name Bathurst Mews can be traced back to Robert Thistlethwaite, who developed the land in Paddington after inheriting its lease from the Bishops of London. He named the street and adjacent mews after his wife Selina’s family name, and she was the daughter of Elizabeth Bathurst.

Early records show residents who lived in the mews in the 1840s, such as Edward Munn, a farmer and corn dealer, and Henry King, a livery stable keeper. Later records show that Bathurst Mews was home to a variety of trades and businesses. In 1868, T. Longman was based here as a bell-hanger, gas-fitter and locksmith, while in 1926, Mrs Ann Cleave ran ‘Tyburn Kennels’ from a house in the mews. By 1927, Mr Gold was advertising driving lessons and car repairs from the street.

Today, Bathurst Mews retains one of the strongest connections to its equestrian past of any London mews. The street is home to Hyde Park Stables, the only remaining working stables in a mews, providing riding lessons and horse hire for Hyde Park – continuing a tradition that dates back to the mews’ earliest days. These stables are a rare reminder of when horses and carriages were an essential part of everyday life in London.
