History of Adam and Eve Mews

Built in the 1880s on the site of the former Adam and Eve Inn, this mews was created to house stables due to the unusual shape of the land. In 1940, the mews was directly hit by a high-explosive bomb, resulting in significant damage and the subsequent rebuilding of a number of properties. Its character now is enhanced by surviving period features, including traditional double garage entrances and first-floor hayloft doors. The mews also retains historic standpipes bearing the name of Thomas Crapper, the Victorian sanitary engineer associated with the popularisation of the modern water closet.
