Making an exhibition of itself: major UK showing at property conference

The glamorous town of Cannes in the South of France is once again under the world’s spotlight but this time for a very different reason

Rather than a glitzy film festival with actors milling about red carpets, the great and the good of the property world are gathered in the waterside location for MIPIM – a four-day real estate exhibition, conference and networking event gathering together 21,000 international professionals, stakeholders, influencers and investors. For the first time ever, the UK government has taken a promotional stand at MIPIM, and Britain as a country has reportedly ‘its biggest presence yet with adverts dominating the entrance to the conference centre’, as mention in this article by The Guardian. The message from all UK sides is ‘we’re open for business’ and the bolstered showing – with expansive stands, scale models and glossy brochures – is a showing of prowess to the global elite, who may have questions following the EU referendum. In fact, Liam Fox, secretary of state for international trade, has said that BREXIT should bring about positive change and new opportunities for property investors, with MIPIM providing an excellent showcase. With the UK setting up stall in Cannes, we can expect more overseas investment, designed to stimulate the housing sector, in the years to come.

Liam Fox, secretary of state for international trade, said the creation of a dedicated UK government pavilion at Cannes was a recognition of the “great changes and opportunities that exist for the real estate sector following the British electorate’s decision to exit the European Union”.
