Elnathan Mews is in the heart of Little Venice, directly off Formosa Street and close to the famous “Clifton Nurseries”. The majority of this mews was sold by the Church Commissioners for redevelopment in 1985. It is rumoured that the properties, having failed to sell, were let to the local council for the homeless. Unfortunately, by the time the freeholders regained possession of the houses, they were pretty much trashed. The houses were then refurbished and all were sold during 1995. This is a most attractive mews which won our Mews in Bloom competition in 2006.

EXTRACT FROM MEWS NEWS - SEPTEMBER 2006: “Elnathan Mews W9 has carried off the honors in this year’s 'Mews in Bloom's competition and wins its place on the coveted, solid silver Lurot Brand armada plate.

The competition was again judged by Candida Lycett Green, the author of several books on gardening, including 'The Garden at Highgrove', which was co-authored with HRH Prince Charles. Elnathan Mews is a 1980's redevelopment of a 19th century mews that fell into disrepair.

Over recent years the residents have made a collective effort to soften the modern architectural style of their buildings, a transformation that started with the planting of copper beech trees along the length of the street. Candida Lycett Green awarded them the runner-up prize last year and the residents’ continued efforts have born fruit.
They have certainly carried out their 2005 vow to win in 2006! The runner-up is Sussex Mews East W2, a mews that won the title in 2001 and is clearly in the running for first prize again in the future. This year Candida has noted ‘that the planting and maturity of some of the shrubs has enhanced it beyond compare’”.

BOROUGH: City of Westminster.
